PUNK IN NUUK?

PHOTO ALBUM

United Colors of Nuuk

NIVE NIELSEN

Nive Nielsen performed with her backup band in the Nuuk Rock Festival on the second night. Very professional performance. We see that she is going to visit the Iceland Airwaves in October!

BLOG COMMENT

A blog comment from a new local friend in Nuuk:

“I like what you are looking at, not some fucking icebergs!!”

SIISSISOQ

A very tight metal band in the Nuuk Rock Festival. They obviously were connected to the local crowd that sang along to all the lyrics.

TORLUUT

A very different band to the HRGP is Torluut, a large band with 4 singers and stories to tell. Here is a little glimpse of their performance in the Nuuk Rock Festival.

HANDICAP RAMP TO THE PARTY GARDEN

This youth band was performing at the Nuuk Rock Festival on the first night. Their humor and attitude reflects intelligence beyond. The text on their websitesite says:

“Many, many moons ago under the thick thunder ice of Greenland, Michael and Minik dated the same girl. Her name was Sassumap arnaa A.K.A Madonna. They quickly decided to form a band. Miki came out of nowhere and joined in. So did Inuuteq and Kunuk.
Inuuteq and Miki have left the band. And Michael “LAmselaar” Jakobsen joined on guitar.. Due to sex change operations in Thailand, Inuuteq, Miki and Lamse quit the band and were replaced by Jaycock and Nicolai.. The operations were not at the same time, so they left the band one by one.. Tell this history to at least three people or die!!!”

How does culture develop?

How do you go from this:

to this?

and this:

It is a strange thing that this happens. With their settlement here the Danish would not allow the Inuits to make their old houses anymore. Sarah and another Danish girl from her school who has been hanging out with us here have said they think it is remarkable that such a small and uninfluential people as the Danish could have reached this almost total control over places as Greenland, The Faroe Islands, Iceland and even Norway for a while. What was their aim, and what is the outcome? The culture in Nuuk is so much more mixed than I imagined before. I see Danish people everywhere among the Inuits but there seems to be some separation. I wonder if any of the Danes living here even look at themselves as Greenlanders.
